What is your typical day, and how do you make it productive?

My day starts with a consistent morning routine before heading to the office. I’ve had the same team for over 17 years, and avoiding turnover has allowed us to maintain efficiency. New team members learn our systems, which have existed for over 20 years. I am naturally productive in areas I am passionate about. For example, I stay productive in the gym by following health podcasts and trying new exercise programs. Similarly, I enjoy being productive with my family by seeking parenting advice, reading books, and listening to relevant podcasts. At work, I focus on exceeding client expectations, viewing referrals as a measure of productivity rather than revenue or profit.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and emerging technologies?

At 25 Financial, we prioritize staying current with market trends and emerging technologies. We subscribe to various platforms for instant updates on IRS regulations and estate planning legislation. Our collaborative group attends conferences and maintains partnerships with experts to learn best practices. Being closely connected with our clients gives us a unique perspective on their needs, allowing us to stay ahead of industry changes.

Can you recall a significant challenge or failure and how you overcame it?

COVID-19 was a significant challenge for the financial markets. Beyond financial fears, there was also a fear of death. Navigating these emotions was tough, but we focused on data rather than emotions. Our highly educated clients were prepared for such unprecedented times. Many invested during the market downturn and were rewarded financially for their approach. My role is to help clients prepare for unknowns and support them through challenging periods.

What is your approach to starting a new project?

Before starting a new project, I assess the problem being solved and whether it is a current or future issue. I evaluate if it affects a small or large group of clients and whether we have the resources to handle it in-house or need to outsource. This feasibility test often reveals that many projects are unnecessary and do not require starting from scratch.

What was your worst job, and what did you learn from it?

One of my most challenging jobs was working on a farm during a high school summer. The days started early, the work was manual and exhausting, and the conditions were harsh. However, it taught me the importance of getting comfortable with discomfort, a lesson that has served me well throughout my life.

Tell us about a skill you taught yourself. How did you go about learning?

Determination is a skill that various mentors have instilled in me throughout my life. This belief in perseverance allows me to give 100% effort to whatever task is before me, leaving the outcome in God’s hands. This mindset has enabled me to push my physical and mental limits confidently.

What people in your life or career have had the most significant impact on you? How?

My parents have had a tremendous impact on my life and career. My dad worked long hours for little pay, while my mom sacrificed her ambitions to raise me. They instilled a strong work ethic and faith in Christ, shaping my values and career. Their examples of dedication and discipline have been foundational in my life.

What do you think makes you successful?

Success is defined by who you are rather than what you do. It’s about being a spiritual leader in my family, providing for my loved ones, and finding joy in what I have rather than chasing what I don’t. My faith has dramatically influenced my definition of success, allowing me to enjoy life fully.

What is one book you recommend everyone should read and why?

I find deep meaning in the book of Ecclesiastes, written by one of history’s wisest and wealthiest kings. It offers profound insights and has greatly influenced my understanding of life and success.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in your chosen field?

I never intentionally pursued a career in finance. My initial goal was to become a police officer, but God’s plans led me to the financial industry. After a hiring freeze in Los Angeles, I began interning at a financial firm. Although I wasn’t initially passionate about it, I found great joy in running a financial practice and building a firm, thanks to the support of my mentors and family.

Can you share a defining moment that shaped your career?

Early in my career, I realized the importance of having a niche. I focused on offering financial services to physicians, who often need more financial education despite their high earnings. A humbling experience at the Mayo Clinic taught me the need for a professional and valuable approach, leading to the foundation of 25 Financial, which provides comprehensive financial planning and contract negotiation services to physicians.

How would you describe your personal and professional values?

My personal and professional values are rooted in scripture and are reflected in the name of our firm, 25 Financial, which symbolizes living “more life.” This concept is about enjoying time with family and being a good steward of financial resources without letting fear of scarcity dictate decisions. Balancing work and family life is crucial, and our firm encourages clients to live fully and enjoy their time.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I advise my younger self to study scripture more intentionally. It provides peace, motivation, and direction, reminding us of life’s truths and helping us navigate challenges with a balanced perspective.

What personal or professional achievements are you most proud of?

I am proud of many achievements, both personal and professional. Among them are founding a successful company, raising five children, and maintaining a strong faith. The decision to step away from my business to focus on family was one of my most outstanding achievements, allowing me to lead a balanced and fulfilling life.

How do you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance?

I maintain a structured morning routine, including scripture study, family time, and physical exercise. This routine helps me start the day with a clear mind and high energy. Understanding that I cannot control everything allows me to approach each day with determination and flexibility, reducing stress and maintaining balance.

How do you define success?

Titles, possessions, or financial status do not measure success. It’s about serving a greater purpose, having integrity, and taking responsibility. True success is a gift reflected in the quality of relationships and the joy in life.

Are there any charitable organizations or community service-oriented activities that you are involved in?

My wife and I are involved in several charitable activities, including Forest Springs, The Pregnancy Center, Joy in the Journey, and Oasis International. We also host events at our private residence to support the community.
